Fireworks

ASSH encourages individuals to attend public fireworks displays, which are monitored for safety by a local fire department, rather than setting off fireworks near or around the home.

Lawnmowers

Each year, more than 74,000 small children, adolescents and adults are injured by rotary, hand and riding power mowers due to improper handling.

Snowblowers

Each year, hundreds of people suffer maiming or amputations of their fingers or hands due to the improper handling of snowblowers.

Pumpkin Carving

Use caution during the Halloween season, and take steps to prevent hand injuries when carving.

Turkey Carving

Nothing says “Thanksgiving” like football, family and the enticing aromas of turkey, stuffing, yams and pumpkin pie. But no matter what’s included in a Thanksgiving spread, one dish nobody anticipates is a hand injury.

Gardening

The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) recommends that gardeners take the proper precautions to prevent hand-related injuries before digging or planting in the garden this spring.

Removing a Ring

There are occasions when a ring needs to be removed with some urgency.  Our bodies change over the years causing arthritis of joints which can swell and/or swelling of the tissue under the ring.  When you can’t simply slide your ring off, try one of these techniques.
